Employee Talent Management is sometimes referred to as Human Capital Management. Talent must be maintained, just as equipment and buildings must be maintained. Retention is a critical part of employee talent management. This means not only making sure that the pay and benefits of a talented employee are competitive, but also that the talented individual be given increasing degrees of autonomy or the ability to choose which projects he or she will work on. The retention aspect of employee talent management also involves on-going development. Leadership training is often essential for talented individuals to move into senior positions and become more effective in their work. Many professionals are required by law to receive on-going training and education to keep licenses and certifications current. Effective employee talent management recognizes that talent often stagnates without on-going development. Employee talent management sometimes means making it convenient for a talented individual to stay with an organization. Some organizations provide cafeterias at which they feed their employees at little or no cost. Some offer on-site day-care for the children of employees. Many others provide wellness programs and offer incentives for employees to participate. Such programs reduce the amount of distraction that talented employees face from their personal lives, and make it easier for them to get to work.
